OTHER ANCHORAGE AREASFor you fellow vagrants who feel a cruising vessel need not PAY to drop its own hook there are decreasing options in the Kingston area. The down side is that the water to the south of Kingston often becomes quite rough due to prevailing winds which requires some manner of headland to the south west. Navy Bay is found east across the Cataraqui River from downtown Kingston and Confederation Basin. On approach to Kingston and the river you can usually see Martello Tower and the roofs of the Royal Military college to the east. Navy Bay is east of Point Frederick on which the Royal Military College is located. There is a shoal that extends from Point Frederick for 300 feet and the sailing school located in the bay can make it busy in season. The docks are private so you must be prepared to anchor and watch your depth. Your other options would include seeking shelter behind Cedar Island or if the weather is calm using the wall of the old customs dock which lies south of the Wolfe Island Ferry docks. There are no services, and the entire structure - area is in dis-repair, however there are a few spots for a couple of lucky boats which have adequate fenders and a careful watch on approach. You may be well advised to wait for the bascule bridge and make your way into the inner harbour. The bascule bridge on the La Salle Causeway opens on the hour from 06:00 to 22:00 hrs. Except at 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 17:00 for busy traffic hours. Try to avoid late afternoons as it can be a long wait as rush hour approaches. Once inside you have access to Kingston Marine on the west shore or Rideau Marina on the east shore. Or you may find a section of wall for the night in Anglin Bay found south of Kingston Marine and officially townhouses bulk heading. Yet another fine option in Kingston for those of you belonging to a yachy club is checking in with the Kingston Yacht Club which is situated west of downtown slightly past the Marine Museum. KYC has a long history of having an active club racing program and comfortable club facilities. Kingston YC Website |
After a season of pushing east under most conditions Collins Bay came up as the hands down winner for a Kingston stop. When the weather builds up in the gap making east west passage difficult, the topography favours Collins Bay where the prevailing winds fail to get a bite. The management has done a great job and the marina is always ship shape and friendly to cruisers. We suggest that you take a look at their web site, they have gone the extra mile even preparing informative handouts for visitors. COLLINS BAY Web site they offer active seminars for those seeking to go south and helpful staff. When approaching from the west you will have to pass between the Amherst Bar (to the south) with its low lying islets and shoals and the mainland. You will see a green flashing light on a white circular to on the west island while Center Brother Island (the largest) has a white skeleton tower of 51 feet with a flashing green and triangular day mark. When rounding from the east and the direction of Kingston proper and Portsmouth harbors. The most noticeable landmark is a huge flag on a private veranda located on Amherst (point) which lies just to the west of your entrance course. In heavy weather you need to be careful not to cut too close to the headland which shelters Ontario Park and the airport as there are wrecks on the shallow water which might surprise you. Collins Bay Marina itself is situated at the head of Collins Bay approximately 1.5 miles from the entrance. A breakwater extends 200 feet from the shore and is marked with a fixed yellow light. CAUTION local reports state that deep draft vessels may have difficulty in entering the inner harbour, therefore caution and confirming draft available is recommended. Perhaps as large a problem as draft is the cut and floating weeds which will plug your water intakes as you pass the town dock. Enjoy the warm friendly community of Collins Bay Marina. Located in a well sheltered harbor next to a 335 acre conservation area equipped with playground, picnic area and nature trails. |
