April13, 1999

As any of you in Southern Ontario remember this last weekend was not a good time for spring photography and our photo shoot of the 1000 islands was pretty much a bust with flat days and poor conditions. However we can report that there is few signs of the upcoming season at his moment and we will delay the construction of this destination until after the western end of Lake Ontario and Toronto.

Ogdensburg Br.

We did spend some time on the historical aspects of the 1000 Islands begining at Prescott and the Johnstown Ogdensburg International bridge where the St Larwence river was a integral part of Canadas early history.

We will begin this part of our guide at the bridge flanked on the Canadian shore by Johnstown and Ogdensburg on the USA shores.

Prescott Grain

Johnstown is marked by a large grain elevator on the north shore perhaps .5 km west of the bridge itself. The Bridgeview Marina and restaurant is tucked into a shallow cove to the north of the grain elevatoir and is approached via a marked channel. Visitors would do well to pay heed to this channel as the bay itself has numerous wrecks and industrial obsticles hidden from view.

Windmill Light

Proceeding upstream from the bridge Ogdensburg lies on the American shore and is marked by the Port of sheds on the waterfront and spites of the church.

After the 1837 rebellion many rebels fled to the United States and joined American sympathisers to overthrow the British colonial rule. The seceret organization mane one of the first attacks on what was to become Canada in 1938 when they lanaded 190 men at a site now makred by the Windmill light and siezed booth the windmill and surrounding buildings. The local settlers remained loyal to the crown and in a few days 2000 malita and regulars supported by locals and british navel vessels retook the mill. This resulted in 11 exicutions and 60 settlers being exciled to Australia.

Prescott Harbor

Prescott was founded in 1784 by the United Empire Loyalists and has one of the newest harbors on the St Lawrence river. Your approach to the harbor is from downstream through a slight dogs-leg cut in the stone breakwall with the historic Fort Welling ton guarding the harbor. This is a deep harbor offering an average of 14 feet docksides and 145 berths. The harbor is close to the town center where you will find everything a visitor will require.
