Port Credit is 9 miles SE of Toronto and part of the City of Mississauga. Port Credit is serviced by GO Trains to Toronto, and scheduled bus services. Port Credit is the largest single commercial harbour on Lake Ontario and offers extensive marine facilities and charter boat operations. Port Credit is a Customs Reporting Station. The entire shore is developed residential with some larger industry however from the lake the shore appears wooded. The most recognizable landmark from offshore is the Four Sisters or stacks of the Lakeview Generating station to the NE. A large hotel apartment is north of the harbor on the east shore. On closer approach you will see the grounded freighter Ridgetown which lies in a WNW direction forming the southerly protection to the harbour.
Port Credit Lights
Port Credit Inner Harbour Light (525) is located on the SW corner of the retaining wall which separated the river from the harbour to the east. It has an elevation of 30 feet and is shown from a 24 foot high white circular tower with red upper portion.
Port Credit has two distincetive harbor areas.
The main harbour is entered between the south west end. There is a 125 foot wide channel between the bow of the Ridgetown ( 1 ) and the head of the west stone break wall. Port Credit Harbour Marina is administered by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. At last recoining there were over 1500 slips available with 7 to 12feet of water. This is a major harbour capable of extensive repairs and with exceptional facilities. The Port Credit Harbour Marina building itself is huge and houses numerous marine services and offers indoor storage for very large vessels.
Some of the services available are:
A channel of 98 feet width and marked by buoys on the west and the retaining wall to the east leads up the Credit River to the inner basin. The Basin is terminated for sailboats by the highway bridge with its 12 foot clearance. CAUTION the mouth of the Credit river is subject to silting and depth may vary from datum. Lakeshore is the main street where there are a number of great restaurants for all tastes, pool hall, Shortwave Marine who offers select electronics and navigation equipment. There is discount food store, post office, and interesting smaller shops. SW of Port Credit, on the west bank of the Credit River, along the shore is the J.C. Saddington day use park with walking paths, a playground and picnic area. |
