Sea Trials Sept 2001

To sail away to distant shores and visit places which we have dreamed of or would like to revisit moves me. Equally there are many of us who love the challenge and adventure posed by this planet's unbounded oceans, yet dream of of when finally have spent enough years pursuing the dollar to do it. These pages are a tribute to one man and his dream combined with his motivation to complete the journey in a time frame which will leave him time to enjoy the fruits of that labour.

Why build a custom boat yourself? Because often there is no other way by which to afford what you want with the degree of comfort and the features not found in any production vessels. Secondly, it poses the final frontier of your own skills marking a deep satisfaction which you can carry with you on your future voyages.

Every once in a while I am struck with someones boat project and unconvential brilliance. This is an ongoing story dedicated to just such a dream. Describing the boat is only one part of this story, Svend himself along with his innovative construction practices should provide an insight as to the sort of precise thinking required to successfully undertake such a project. Svend is no stranger to construction, having prospered from his fabrication skills for enough years to begin this mega project.

Svend began sailing with his father in Denmark as a child, but did not get truly hooked until the early seventies in Toronto, where he bought his first boat a Viking 33 or 34. For her home he joined the Ashbridge Bay Yacht Club moving to the new clubhouse where he raced on a regular basis. His story wanders here, but from all accounts he was an avid racer who progressed steady.

In 1991 Svend turned the Vikings bow south for the first time. This undoubtedly set the seed forever, as he spent three years living aboard and cruising the Caribbean. Now a Viking is a fast boat for her size but never did provide a lot of living space which definitely set him apart as an outdoors person.

By 1994 he returned, and armed with a dream of returning, bought an older FG Trojan with which to head back south again. His reason was to experience and to learn about fiberglass, which I do not doubt knowing he did.because of.its age. The Trojan provided much more space but the operational cost was such that after getting south the boat never returned with him.

Determined, with dreams of a large trawler in his mind, back in Toronto the plan began to come together. His occupation as a fabricator provided a excellent understanding of the basic requirements along with the continuing study of existing designs. The more he thought the more a pure power vessel became impractical. Eventually settling on a catamaran makes the beginning of this particular odyssey.

Sven Petersons Caterman

I first met Svend in the late summer of 1999 through a friend. The first time that we visited him at Waupoos Marina was.at the time we were rebuilding our own boat.elsewhere The hulls of the Cat were barely joined together and he was completing the huge cross sections which were to join her hulls. I was immediately struck with his orginaziton of the work space and equipment within the construction area.
