St. Johnsville is approximately 1.5 miles downstream and has a Municipal Marina with adequate depth for most cruising boats to tie up and good repair facilities. St. Johnsville has a post office a couple of blocks to the north along Bridge Street.
A little over 3 miles downstream from St. Johnsville preceded by W391 is Abel Island which offers limited opportunity to drop a hook off theper providing you do not block the narrow channel on the western side. A mile further preceded by 379 you reach Lock 15 on the northern fringes of Ft. Plain and a drop of only 8'.
Just under 5 miles further downstream is Lock 14 in Canajoharie on the port or northern side of the canal. Lock 14 once again has a limited drop of 8' and has a pleasant little park beside the lock. We left our guest here for their ride home. slightly less than 8 miles further Lock 13 at Yosts is preceded by R308A on a crib midstream and 309 on the starboard shore. Lock 13 has a drop of 8' again and the next 9 miles is straightforward. Another chance to get out of the channel exists slightly above Lock 12 preceded by W247 on your starboard shore in the form of Schoharie Creek which has a depth of 7' to 8' where it joins the canal.
Lock 12 at Tribes hill lies to the north side of the canal and has a drop of 11' . Downstream of Lock 12 above Amsterdam you pass several small Islands of Upper Pepper, Pepper and Robb Isl. on the northern edges of the canal however depth behind them is limited. As you leave Robb Island astern Amsterdam is before you. Lock 11 with a drop of 12' is on the north shore. There is a hospital is just across the tracks to the north 3 blocks and 5 blocks west. |
