RCMP TO ASSIST IN KEEPING NATIONAL PARKS OF CANADA SAFE

Chief Executive Officer of Parks Canada Tom Lee today announced that up to 140 additional RCMP resources will be deployed to the 39 national parks of Canada during the 2001 visitor season to support Parks Canada in keeping the national parks of Canada safe. This will effect St Lawrence National Parks and Thousand Islands as well as all other National Parks.

"It is regrettable that Parks Canada's proposed interim plan was not deemed acceptable by the Health and Safety Officer. The RCMP has full authority to enforce the Canada National Parks Act and the Criminal Code and other federal statutes to ensure the public peace. Park wardens will continue their other duties of resource management and visitor safety, such as search and rescue operations."

For the 2001 operating season, additional RCMP resources will be deployed to existing detachments in provinces and territories and new temporary detachments will be created in national parks in Ontario and Quebec.

Sydney Rushcutters Bay Olympic Marina to be removed

The (Australian) NSW Premier, Bob Carr, announced on March 29 in the NSW Parliament that the marina built for the Olympic Games is to be removed.

Australian Yachting Federation has been lobbying, on behalf of the sailing and broader community, for more than four years for a legacy from the Olympic Games, in the form of a marina. There is an acute shortage of marina berths in Sydney. There is no venue from which major national or international keelboat events can be run. The removal of the marina means that these events, and the significant economic benefits associated with them, are now lost.

A submission by the Australian Yachting Federation was only lodged last week after the board meeting. Submissions from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and d'Alboro Marina were also expected to be lodged.
