Multi-image production standards are being set by us all. And their significance is real. Ask any staging company. AMI has taken the matter in hand and has formed a committee, made up of the members who realize the problems of "no standards". R. Morrish of Producers Optical Services, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has been a key figure in the production of AMI's first Recommended Production Practices publication. The following are some excerpts from a discussion with Morrish, regarding the publication.

RM

In October 1981 I was appointed the chairman of the USA/International Standards Committee and began to pick up the strings. We wanted to create some production guidelines. Some 70 reports of that meeting were sent to all the people who had ever attended a meeting in the USA or Canada or had expressed an interest.

The objective was to create a basic guideline of practices for the developing producer and to create a forum for future requirements at more advanced levels. Items to be considered were: Terminology, Concept and Organization, Sound Track, Photography, Art, Assembly of Components, Programming, Staging, and Distribution.

The first trial version was distributed to over 300 people. There were several regional meetings and extensive phone calls between the members.

Multi-image people have tended to be mavericks. Do you think this will help change the industry somewhat? In what ways?

RM

Mavericks or not, debate , discussion, and resolution are essential for the smooth operation of anyone engaged in the field of communications. One of the basic principals is to support your views. Once the framework for this debate was created. With so many brilliant practitioners of multi-image, contributing and reviewing concepts from left field were well discussed.

Version I of Recommended Production Practices will change the industry by offering participation. We would prefer the wizards of multi-image to share their experience with us rather than with the next party. More than once in the last couple of years I have had my eyes opened, so I know there is talent out there.

MI

The AMI Recommended Production Practices is the first time that a comprehensive set of recommendations for our industry has ever been published. It is the turning point in the development of our industry; we still make slides, but communications is our business.

End excerpt:

The rest is now history that I am proud to have been a part of. Schools and colleges used these documents extensively hopefully contributing to today's talent. The WEB is very much like multi-image was in 1984, our tools have changed, but the art of communications and production will always require the skills I developed in these early days.
