12 volt system: Under normal cruising conditions where you run at least several hours a day you probably cannot run the batteries down no matter how hard you try, I have not been able to. The moment you start the main engine you are charging both the 2 engine strating group 31A bateries and the house bank of parallel 6 volts (12 volt house). I have never had it take much more than an hour to reach full charge. If you are at dock the 30 AMP Xantrex yakes over, or if you are anchored I run the generator for an hour a day to charge and heat water.
The 24 volt system either requires you have shore power or the generator running to chargeg. A draw until dead" test in 20C winter it took 7 and one half days to draw the 24 V bank down to where the ESPAR shut off by a low voltage saftey overide.
The entire electrical has been a focus of the refit. Both 12V and 115 V wiring is now properly run in conduit, labeled, numbered and it location/function recorded on the master maintenance records.
Form the begining the requirement was to create a usable maintenance manual and reference. The creation of circuit diagrams was essential.
One of the first jobs was to provide an adequate battery reserve for the planned systems and their draw. Because the Espar furnace only works on 24 VDC there are really 4 complete systems aboard DEFIANCE.
To begin with all 115 VAC chargers have boat a 3.5 KW air cooled gas generator for emergency use, and the primary 4KW Entac generator that can charge the batteries at anchor.
.1. There are 2 group 31A cranking batteries (150 AH), with a A/B master switch and isolated. The cranking batteries are charged either from the Xantrex 40 Tru-Charge or from a 90- AMP engine driven marine alternator. These batteries and switches are located to the extreme aft of the engine room under the starboard deck area.
.2. There are 4, six (6) volt DC golf cart batteries in parallel that provide house power. The house batteries are charged either from the Xantrex 40 Tru-Charge or from a 90- AMP engine driven marine alternator. The a & b sides of the parallel circuit are protected by an idolater.
.3. There are 8, six (6) volt golf cart batteries, again in parallel (for amperage) that provide the 24 VDC battery reserve. The batteries are charged via the Heart Freedom 25 100AMP shore power charger.
